Steven Cantor’s documentary, Dancer, follows ballet prodigy Sergei Polunin.

This documentary is a beautifully crafted time capsule of the extraordinary career of Sergei Polunin. Hailed from adolescence as being an exceptional dancer, Polunin’s early life was shaped accordingly. He went to dance classes as a young child in Ukraine, moved to London away from his family to train at the Royal Ballet School at 13, and went on to be the Royal Ballet’s youngest ever principal dancer at 19.

Through interviews, home videos, and all-access footage, Dancer offers a glimpse into the trials and tribulations of the complex, rebellious and spectacularly talented Sergei Polunin.

A particularly jaw-dropping section of Dancer is the behind-the-scenes footage of the filming of Polunin’s viral dance video to Hozier’s Take Me To Church. Shot in Hawaii and directed by David LaChapelle, the video expresses his frustrations and deeply conflicted relationship with dancing.

We cannot recommend this documentary enough. Moving, beautiful and utterly captivating. A must watch!
